A certified public accountant, John Ferraro serves as Global Chief Operating Officer with the tax, advisory, transaction, and assurance firm Ernst and Young (EY). The organization is recognized as one of the world’s preeminent accounting firms, with 167,000 people delivering exceptional client service in more than 140 countries. John Ferraro also directs Ernst and Young’s yearly globalization thought leadership program, which is launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland each January.

In creating the annual EY globalization research, Mr. Ferraro and his team measure a number of country-specific factors, including movement of labor, technology exchange, and openness to external trade. Unlike similar competitiveness rankings, EY’s index analyzes “idea flow” rather than simple openness to new ideas. Speaking to media attending Davos in 2012, he emphasized that while globalization trends were temporarily disrupted due to economic and financial crises, underlying trends toward market liberalization remained robust and resilient.

John Ferraro earned his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting at Marquette University’s College of Business Administration and joined EY’s auditing staff on a full-time basis in 1977. Over the course of his career, he has held positions in several EY offices throughout North America and Europe. Executive roles he has filled with the firm include Americas Head of Client Services, and US Head of Sales and Marketing, with industry-specific experience spanning the oil and gas and telecommunications sectors.

John Ferraro has always demonstrated a strong commitment to education. Working together with the University of Notre Dame and the University of Virginia, John Ferraro championed and developed a unique Master's program, primarily aimed at non-accounting business majors. “Your Master Plan” is a 15-month program that allows participants to earn a Masters of Accountancy at the University of Notre Dame while gaining valuable work experience. John Ferraro’s EY inclusiveness and diversity efforts were recognized as a finalist in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s “Out and Equal Workplace Advocate Award.”

Passionate about history and historical preservation, Mr. Ferraro won the coveted first place award in the 2010 Cambridge, Massachusetts, Preservation Recognition Program for his efforts in the museum-like restoration of his family home, a Victorian house built in 1887.
