As an undergraduate pharmacy student at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, Sherif Mohamed El-Refai learned a great deal about healthcare from the perspective of dealing with already-diagnosed cases, but did not receive much practical training in diagnosing or prioritizing people with illnesses or injuries. That all changed in the spring of 2009, when he was part of a group of UNC Pharmacy students who joined a medical relief mission to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, during their spring break. In addition to dispensing medications, Sherif Mohamed El-Refai, who describes his Spanish language skills as “intermediate,” was able to spend some time in triage, talking with patients to determine their ailments.

A major element of Sherif Mohamed El-Refai’s motivation in participating in the mission was his desire to conduct similar missions to the poorest parts of Egypt, his ancestral homeland.
